About Westinghouse Electric Corporation
Westinghouse Electric Corporation, now a part of ViacomCBS, was an American manufacturer of home appliances, consumer electronics, lighting solutions, industrial power solutions, and more. The company was first formed in 1886 by George Westinghouse, and their initial years consisted of the development of the world’s first industrial AC system and the implementation of AC generators at the Adams Power Plant in Buffalo, New York.
At the turn of the century, Westinghouse Electric Corporation began to focus on the acquisition of various businesses, and this helped them to diversify their market presence with the introduction of home appliance products. During the 1920s, the company also released the first commercial radio broadcast and produced a factory built radio receiver. At this time, Westinghouse focused on the development of a variety of innovations, some examples including the world’s first atom smasher, the first industrial gas turbine, elevators for the Rockefeller Center, and much more.
As the century neared its end, Westinghouse Electric Corporation was met with financial difficulty. To remedy the situation, the company began restructuring and reorganizing. During this procedure, the company sold off various divisions and assets such as their office furniture, defense electronics, and non-nuclear power sectors. With their new focus set on broadcasting, Westinghouse began acquiring businesses once again, buying companies such as CBS. With CBS, Westinghouse rebranded themselves as CBS Corporation, utilizing the Westinghouse name for their subsidiaries. In 1999, CBS was acquired by Viacom, and the company now continues as ViacomCBS.
