About Western Digital
Western Digital was first established in 1970 as General Digital by entrepreneur Alvin B. Phillips, and their initial offerings consisted of manufactured MOS test equipment. Western Digital quickly became a producer of specialized semiconductors, and their first product, a universal asynchronous receiver-transmitter, was released in 1971. By 1975, Western Digital established themselves as a renown producer of calculator chips, though they were faced with chapter 11 bankruptcy a year later.
Despite this setback, Western Digital focused their efforts on forming themselves as a general-purpose OEM hardware supplier serving the computer market sector. To cater towards such product offerings, Western Digital began acquiring multiple businesses that focused on various computer components such as core logic chipsets and graphics cards. During the 1990’s, Western Digital began to find success in hard drives and Memory storage unit, even partnering with IBM in 1998 in order to utilize IBM technologies and production facilities.
During the 2000’s, Western Digital introduced portable storage solutions, including the USB flash drive, and this technology became ever more advanced and cheap as time progressed. Currently, Western Digital focuses on developing their electronics product portfolio, as well as on the acquisition of various electronics manufacturers.
