LORD Corporation is a U.S.-based technology and manufacturing company that develops adhesives, coatings, motion management devices, and sensing technologies for aerospace, automotive, oil and gas, and industrial applications. LORD’s headquarters are based in Cary, North Carolina, and employs roughly 3,100 workers in 26 countries. LORD was originally founded by Hugh C. Lord in Erie, Pennsylvania, in 1924 to develop noise-reduction techniques in automobiles, which he thought were too loud. LORD was created to explore rubber-to-metal bonding to isolate and control shock, vibration, and noise. In the 1920s, General Electric used LORD manufactured mounts for trolley cars, while Lincoln and Nash motors used LORD engine mountings. In the 1940s, the LORD Manufacturing Company was incorporated, and supplied engine mounts for aircraft manufacturers, mountings for railroad cars and buses, and the first elastomeric transmission parts and engine isolators for helicopters. During the 1960s, LORD built new facilities in Pennsylvania to manufacture Chemlok adhesives and Chemglaze coating, and changed its name to LORD Corporation. Over the decades, LORD continued to open new facilities in both domestic and international locations, including Brazil, Japan, and China, and worked with The US Navy to develop elastomeric bearings for carrier-based aircraft. On April 29, 2019, it was announced that Parker Hannifin would be acquiring LORD Corporation for $3.675 billion dollars. The sale is currently undergoing regulatory approvals.
Adhesive Solutions: This segment features adhesive products that utilize acrylic, epoxy, and urethane technologies. LORD adhesives agents are meant to endure high-stress environmental conditions and can bond a variety of surfaces including bare metal, painted metal, composite, rubber-to-substrate and more. LORD’s brands include Chemlok, Flocklok, Fusor, Signlock, and Maxlok.
Coatings: LORD’s coatings are meant to protect metals, synthetic elastomers, rubbers, plastics, ceramics, and wood from heat, water, and corrosion. They can also enhance a substrate’s adhesive or abrasive properties. Brands include Aeroglaze, Autoseal, Chemglaze, and LokRelease.
Electronic Materials: This segment includes materials that help in thermal management, potting and encapsulation, gap filling, semiconductor packing, adhesive, and thick film materials. These materials are typically made from urethanes, epoxies, and silicones.
Flight Control Equipment: This division consists of flight control systems such as cockpit controls and inceptors, and electromechanical actuators for fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters.
Sensing Solutions: LORD designs and manufactures sensors for OEM, testing, and measurement applications. These electronic sensors have a wide variety of purposes, including inertial, pressure, temperature, displacement, and load-force torque. LORD also manufactures wireless sensor networks to manage these sensors.
Speciality Chemicals: This segment includes specialized chemicals and products based on rubber technology, including compounds, additives, curatives, emulsions, and mold release.
Vibration and Motion Controls: LORD has developed vibration dampening technologies for over ninety years, with products that reduce noise, shock, and motions in aerospace, industrial, and defense applications such as roller bearings, equipment and vibration isolators, engine mounts, APU mounts, and shimmy dampeners.
LORD’s subsidiaries include its regional subdivisions, such as LORD Europe, LORD India, LORD Japan, etc, as well as Burke Palmason Chemical Company, Mavidon Corporation, Castall Inc., BalaDyne Corporation, Metal Gomma S.p.A., and many others.
LORD’s primary partner will be Parker Hannifin Corp, which recently purchased LORD in April 2019. LORD has also worked with Bell Helicopter, the US Navy, Henkel Germany, Tubelite Company Incorporated, and others.
LORD Corporation’s competitors include HB Fuller, RPM International, Bostik, Nordson, PPG, 3M Company, and others.
