About Acer Inc.

Acer Incorporated was originally founded as Multitech by Stan Shih, his wife Carolyn Yeh, and five others in 1976, with headquarters in Hsinchu City, Taiwan. Initially, Multitech was a distributor of electronic parts, a consultant for using microprocessor technologies, and producing the Micro-Professor MPF-I training kit and two Apple II clones, the Microprofessor II and III. Multitech Systems would then join the IBM PC compatible market, becoming a significant PC manufacturer, and go on to rename itself Acer in 1987. In 1998, Acer reorganized itself into five groups: Acer International Service Group, Acer Sertek Service Group, Acer Semiconductor Group, Acer Information Products Group, and Acer Peripherals Group. In 2000 and 2001, Acer spun off its contract business, renaming it Wistron Corporation, then sold off both Wistron and BenQ in order to shift focus from manufacturing to design and sales. Acer has made multiple acquisitions over its lifespan. In 1988, it acquired Counterpoint Computers, and in 1990 did the same with Altos Computer Corporation. In 1993, Acer purchased Commodore International’s PC division, and four years later purchased Texas Instruments’ notebook computer business as well. Ten years later, in 2007, Acer acquired its US-based rival Gateway Inc, and a 75% controlling interest in Packard Bell. Later that year they also purchased E-TEN, an electronics manufacturing company based in Taiwan. In 2009, Acer acquired 29.9% of Olidata, an Italian computer system manufacturer, and in 2011 purchase iGware for $320 million to enter the cloud computing market. From 2015 to 2017, Acer invested in or acquired multiple hardware companies, such as robotics start-up Jibo, Starbreeze AB, a virtual-reality hardware producer, and Pawbo, the makers of wireless pet cameras.

Products, Services, and Platforms

Personal computers: Acer sells a wide variety of electronics and computers for personal and business applications. Acer offers conventional desktops PCs, such as the Aspire Z3 all-in-one desktop, tablets like the Iconia One 7, laptops, and a specialized Predator line for dedicated gaming purposes.

Computer monitors: This division includes the line of video monitors Acer offers to accompany their desktop PCs, varying in size, screen resolution, and pricing. These products include the Basic K2 and G6, and the Predator XB1, XB2, XR, and Z35 models.

Projectors: Acer offers several video projectors suitable for both home and office environments in several price ranges, such as the EV-833H DLP and V6820i.

Peripheral devices: Acer also produces peripheral devices for the PC market, such as computer mice, keyboards, cables, batteries and power adapters, and memory storage devices and flash drives.

Acer’s subsidiaries include its various regional subdivisions, such as Acer America Corporation, Acer India, and Acer Computer Australia, as well as Packard-Bell, grandPad, Altos Computer Corporation, Counterpoint Computers, E-TEN, Olidata, igWare Inc., Xplova, Jibo, Pawbo, and AOPEN, and others. Acer’s partners include Founder Technology, Starbreeze AB, Microsoft Corp, and others.
