About AM General

AM General is a United States manufacturer of heavy vehicles and contract automotive vehicles. Headquartered in South Bend, Indiana, the manufacturer is most known for their Hummer and Humvee vehicles that serve civilian and defense applications respectively. Furthermore, AM General also has a history of producing transit buses, previously manufacturing over 5,400 units during the 1970s.

With a long history tracing back to the Standard Wheel Company, AM General was first established in 1971 when American Motors Corporation purchased and reformed the General Product Division of Jeep. Later, in 1983, AM General was acquired by LTV Corporation, and they later relocated to their current facilities in Indiana. In 1992, AM General was acquired by Renco Group who then changed the subsidiary into a limited liability company. Later that year, AM General initialized production of the Humvee as a civilian vehicle under the Hummer brand. Over the following years, AM General would continue production of the vehicle until its rights were purchased by GM in 1999. Leading into the present, AM General has continued to manufacture their various vehicles that serve both civilian and defense applications.
